D. Jay Morissette (Head Coach)

Jay Morissette, Long Reach Swim Coach

Jay has been the head coach of the team since the 1985-86 swim season and is Maine’s only American Swim Coaches Association Level 5 certified coach.

A graduate of the University of Maine at Orono, he swam for Allan Switzer and held 2 University swim team records (50 + 100 freestyles) for 30 years. Prior to college he swam at the Kennebec Valley YMCA in Augusta under coach Ann Palozzi and held 3 team (50, 100, + 200 freestyles) for 35 years.  And held the state record for those events for 30 years.

An on again off again master’s swimmer over the years, his best seasons involved a 2nd place finish at the 1989 Masters U.S. nationals in the 50 free (20.97) and at the 1996 Masters world championships three 4th place finishes. While coach at the Bath YMCA he has coached five individual and one relay National Champion with a combined 16 Nationals titles, two National records, over 60 YMCA All Americans and over 100 YMCA top 16 swimmers. He has also coached several senior national level swimmers and has coached seven swimmers to making the Olympic trials cut times.

His teams have won 36 YMCA state titles 34 of them in a row with 3-runner up positions and 16 out of the last 21 U.S. league winter state championship team titles, finishing 2nd in four, as well as nine summer combined championship titles. He was named YMCA coach of the year in 2005 and U.S coach of the year in 2007 and 2009.  He is currently on the Maine Swimming and Diving Hall of fame committee.  He has held many positions on the Maine Swimming Inc. board of directors.
